(1)在南傳的彌蘭陀王(西元前2世紀末期統治印度和希臘一些地區)和高僧那先比丘(Nagasena)對答所編成的[彌蘭陀王問經]，有南傳的譯本，此中提及那先比丘擅長[因明]，此為因明這一術語出處之一。 (2)在北傳的大毗婆沙論(約西元50年編出)中同樣提及因明這一術語，但是歸入外道所用。 (3)北傳的瑜伽師地論(約西元350年編出)中提及因明這一術語，並已經納入菩薩的必修五明之一。
