八聖道的八個成分不能分開。其他七個成分沒有準備就緒，只有「智慧」（正見）不能導致聖道。
長老類比的例子：就像一個人只有大腦，但沒有雙臂和雙腿；像一個只有一條腿的蜘蛛；像一碗好湯要由多種成分組成，如果湯中只有鹽或只有辣椒，沒有人會接受它。這八個成分凝聚成聖道。
