佛陀在《增支部．一集》說：
「諸比丘！心者，是極光淨者，能從客隨煩惱得解脫，而有聞之聖弟子能如實解，故我言有聞之聖弟子修心。」 凡夫的心是心性本淨（極光淨者）而客塵所染（客隨煩惱所雜染）。什麼是客塵？ 貪瞋的習性就是客塵，「我是他非」的分別心就是客塵，對立就是客塵。 「有聞之聖弟子」經由親近善士、聽聞正法，如實知道心性本淨，在生活中培養正念以修心，安住於「心性本淨」，因而能從「客塵」得到解脫。
